Investing in Education: AVY News Spotlights Develop Africa's School Support in Freetown

Education is the foundation of progress and a powerful tool for transforming lives.  Through the generous support of donors, like you, over 129 pupils students in Freetown were provided with scholarships, school supplies, and essential resources.   AVY News featured an interview with Abu C., the Director of Develop Africa Sierra Leone (DASL), during this school year's distribution in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

"Education stands as a cornerstone of national development, with human capital and advancement taking center stage under the President's administration in alignment with the vision. Develop Africa Sierra Leone, a non-profit organization, has been supporting the educational sector in the country. The work of the organization is visible with the improvement of access to education by providing scholarships, school supplies, and school infrastructure support. In continuation of their support, the organization distributed learning materials and money to over 129 pupils across the country.

Our gathering this morning is centered around our annual distribution and scholarship program that we have for our beneficiaries across the country. We have already done the distribution in the other parts of the country, and Freetown will be the last one, and today we are here distributing school learning materials to over 70 beneficiaries in Freetown.

Each year we provided brand new school bags, exercise books, pens, water bottles, pencils, erasers, and assorted learning materials and also provided some financial assistance depending on the age and category of beneficiaries.

Each year the goal is to make sure we motivate these young people to stay in schools, stay focused, and also let their parents know that we want to partner with them deliberately for the development and holistic growth of their children. At the end of the day, what matters is having someone or an organization that will help you with your education or the development of your child towards the next level.

Mr. Abu C., the programs manager of the organization emphasizes the free skills and training they render to these pupils.

Holistic development is crucial; ensuring that every child is holistically developed is very central to what we are doing in terms of our transformational educational package. In Develop Africa, our intervention stance from the nursery school we have in the Karene district in Kamawornie village, our other aim is to support students in the university and provide computer literacy for beneficiaries and also physiological counseling. We want to cater for the holistic man; we want to make sure our beneficiaries are well catered for, well placed to have the required skills, and will be able to make informed decisions about their lives and their environment.

Parents and pupils’ express gratitude to Develop Africa Sierra Leone and donors for their support, stating that such a gesture is timing and essential.

I’m excited for what Develop Africa is doing. As a parent, I’m unable to buy a bag for my child, but with these supplies that I have received today, the money will be enough to buy uniforms and also pay his school charges. I've been here for three years now, and I’m happy that they are helping me support my kid."

The impact of these efforts is evident in the gratitude expressed by parents and students who now have renewed hope for their future. By investing in education, we are not only transforming individual lives but also strengthening entire communities. Thanks to the unwavering support of donors, like you, children in Sierra Leone are being given the opportunity to dream big, stay in school, and achieve their full potential. Together, we are shaping the future leaders of Freetown and beyond.
